The Post-Graduate Diploma in Textile Design is specifically designed to meet industrial requirements nationally and internationally. The program emphasizes on commercial design innovations through individualistic efforts to develop a personal design philosophy for the rapidly changing commercial environment. The student draws upon rich traditional and contemporary design heritage for the conceptualization of design ideas for further product development. The learning consists of exciting developments in all four fabric development techniques i.e. embroidery, weaving, knitting and print designing.
The course focuses on a comprehensive intellectual growth and professional development, interspersed with projects and industry interaction to enhance the classroom learning experience. The first year develops holistic perspective of complete product development process, right from the concept to the consumer. There is an emphasis on the students to have basic knowledge and understanding of the core areas of the textile design processes along with contextual design studies, CAD and communication skills. The teaching strategies in second year are more application based. The focus is on correlation between design and technology. Students are expected to explore and research into design areas to develop authentic and original work. They are expected to integrate their knowledge with commercial practices and market understanding. The focus of this year is on developing design philosophy and understanding business viability. The learning culminates with the integration of all the taught aspects with the final design collection. The final design collection is eventually displayed in a public event open to professionals from the export houses, buying houses, design businesses, mills and academia.
The students are encouraged to critique their work along with the peer, as peer evaluation and group work is intrinsic part of the learning experience. The core modules are career focused supported by various design softwares, business modules like merchandising and retailing, entrepreneurial skills which are necessary aptitudes to become professionals in the industry. Sustainability and design ethics are emphasized at each stage to gain value based professional competencies. A PAF Textile Design professional has a personal style and vision with analytical abilities to work as a successful designer. One can work for the domestic, export market, handlooms, composite mills or become entrepreneur. The market provides ample avenues to students to work as textile designers, merchandisers, fabric managers, product developers, fashion coordinators, home stylist, and freelancers.
